What happens when you take handsomely shaped hats and you mold them inside out and place them upside down? You get a line of beautifully organic molded felt containers we call SoftBowls. These decorative bowls are made out of 100% molded wool using hat molds from the 1800’s by one of the last millineries in the US. Use them as storage containers for your mail, keys and wallet or as planter cozies and soft storage around your home and office.

We strive to manufacture all of our products in the Philadelphia tri-state area (over 70% of our collection meets this criteria). All of our products are made in the US with the majority of the material extraction also taking place within the continental US.
Biodegradable
Biodegradable A material that has the ability to break down, safely and relatively quickly, by biological means, into the raw materials of nature and disappear into the environment. These products can be solids biodegrading into the soil (also referred to as compostable), or liquids biodegrading into water.

Softbowls are crafted from wool felt, a material with untapped functional and aesthetic potential. Our design showcases the beauty, structure, and tactile qualities of this natural, biodegradable material by reimagining it in an unexpected application.

Industrial Craft

The processes used by millineries to create form and function offered a unique platform for reimagining this industrial craft for a new century. From the use of renewable, compostable materials and the inspiring shapes of hat blocks to the reliance on steam and human power, each step demonstrated the potential of repurposing industry to emphasize sustainability and community in design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Softbowls can be vacuumed or wiped with a damp cloth. For tougher stains, use a steamer and a soft cloth. For superficial stains, low-grit sandpaper can be used to carefully remove stained layers of wool.
To fix dents, use a steamer on the affected area for about 20-30 seconds. Then, gently reshape the wool bowl by hand. Once dry, the bowl will hold its corrected shape.
